Governor Strikes back
Governor of West Bengal Mr. Gopal Krishna Gandhi asked the Calcutta University senate not to go ahead with Thursday's scheduled elections for the post of vice- chancellor. He also told current vice chancellor Ashish Banerjee  to continue for another one year. Basically the governor of Bengal hold the Chancellor of Calcutta University post. He has official right to execute power to stop election in the office of chancellor. But it is the first time happened in 150 years of history, only once in 1980 then Governor A. P. Sharma had backed Santosh Bhattacharya as vice chancellor. The expected candidate for the new vice chancellor post would be Suranjan Das, currently pro vice chancellor (academic affairs) and Surabhi Banerjee, vice chancellor of Netaji Subhas open University. There are rumors that both of them have name in CPM good book. Is Governor is striking back on CPM? In recent past Mr. Gandhi reacted like partisan in Nandigram and Singur and came down heavily on CPM. However the present vice chancellor Ashish Banerjee has already served two terms, and he will be the first vice chancellor to continue in office for a third term.
